We Educate

We are currently offering four educational opportunities. Contact us if you would like more info or to book a session.

1. Elmer the Safety Elephant

The Elmer the Safety Elephant pedestrian and bicycle safety program is delivered to over 8,000 preschool and school aged children in K/Gr1 classrooms, preschools and daycares in North and West Vancouver. The “reach” of Safety Council materials distributed through the classroom and in community events far exceeded that number. In addition, teachers continue to provide excellent feedback on the presentations made by our instructors and consistently indicate that they inculcate the “Elmer” and Cycle Safety program messages throughout the school term. “Elmer” is also present at several North Shore community festivals.

2. Be Bright Be Seen

Our new program, Be Bright Be Seen is designed for young elementary school kids. The program focuses on safely using active transportation in low light conditions and is geared towards grade 2 & 3 students. See our educational booklet in the link below.

3. Bike Rodeo and Helmet Check

This no-cost, volunteer-led program responds to requests from school groups and Brownie/Guide and Cub/Scout groups to use school or church play areas for simulated road-traffic cycling instruction and practice. Children build confidence and learn important life skills. Rules of the road and cycling safety is emphasized.

4. Crossing Guard Training

We offer a 90 minute session that teachers kids and parent supervisors the basics of how to safely run a crossing guard program. For the first 30 minutes in the classroom the participants learn safety procedures, roles and responsibilities. For the last 60 minutes we take to the crosswalk where we practice the skills we’ve learned in class. We use volunteer drivers to hone our skills. At the end of the session participants are given a certificate of completion. The cost of the program is $45 for the 90 minutes. The course can be completed before, during or after school hours.
